XVIII WORLD CONGRESS OF GERONTOLOGY

Healthy aging in the 21stcentury:
Building bridges between research and practice

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL
JUNE 26-30
2005

18th Congress of International Association of Gerontology

Letter from the President
Welcome to Rio de Janeiro and to the 18th Congress of International Association of Gerontology, to be held in Brazil from June 26 to 30, 2005. We are just starting the organization of a provocative and rich scientific program through which we wish to attract internationally recognized experts in Gerontology.

The chosen theme, Healthy aging in the 21st century: Building bridges between research and practice, symbolizes our strong concern for coping with the challenges proposed by the aging of populations, now in course all around the world, but mostly in the developing countries. A creative and harmonic interplay between research and practice will allow us to find adaptive, under measure solutions for our problems.

In a world increasingly interconnected by all sorts of networks, it seems urgent to build bridges between and inside hemispheres, countries, disciplines and jobs in the field of aging. In fact, the promotion of healthy aging in the next decades depends on our ability and effort in crossing frontiers and building new paradigms.

At the end of the 18th Congress it is planned the presentation of the Letter from Rio de Janeiro. It will include our conclusions and remarks derived from a short but productive period of face-to-face contact among scientists, scholars, policy makers, students and practioners from many origins.

The natural and cultural beauties of Rio de Janeiro exceed any necessity of introduction! Join to us! Enjoy Brazilian hospitality and share knowledge and concern toward successful development and aging for all citizens!

I am looking forward to meeting you in Rio de Janeiro in June 2005!

Cordially
